Eric will be speaking about “Analytics” at Searchfest 2009 which will be held March 10th in Portland, Oregon. Get your tickets now.

1) Please give me your background and tell us what you do for a living.
I am an author and consultant at Web Analytics Demystified in Portland, Oregon. I work with companies to improve their overall strategic use of web and digital analytics applications like Omniture, WebTrends, and even Google Analytics. You can learn more about Web Analytics Demystified at www.webanalyticsdemystified.com. In my spare time I am the developer behind the increasingly popular Twitter Influence Calculator (www.webanalyticsdemystified.com/twitter) which is an analytics tool for Twitter users.

2) When is Google Analytics “good enough” for business use and when is it not?
Google Analytics is "good enough" in situations where companies have no budget, no resources, and no time for web analytics. Even when companies have some budget and some time for web analytics, since the v3 upgrade, Google Analytics is able to tell you a lot about your web site. But in my experience, most companies that are really serious about web analytics are working primarily with an Omniture, a WebTrends, or a Coremetrics.

3) What are some of the top “analytical analysis errors” that businesses make?
The most common mistakes companies make with web analytics are a) thinking it will be easy, b) failing to dedicate resources to analytics projects, and c) failing to think strategically about web analytics. The dirty little secret is that web analytics is hard and being truly successful with a web analytics practice takes a lot of effort and focus on the part of the business. To this end Web Analytics Demystified puts out a bunch of free research on web analytics that your readers can download from www.webanalyticsdemystified.com/research
